A striking frame chair made for Steve by English based Sitting Firm Chairmakers. It has a distinctive English pippy oak splat and generous width to the English oak seat offering hours of comfortable sitting.

A Splat Back Frame Chair (sometimes called a splat-back chair) is a style of chair characterized by a distinctive center back support piece called a “splat” – this is a vertical piece that runs down the middle of the chair’s back. The splat often features decorative carved or shaped designs and connects the top rail of the chair back to the seat.

This style was particularly popular in 18th century furniture design, especially in Queen Anne and Chippendale styles. The splat typically has a vase-shaped or fiddle-shaped design that provides both structural support and decorative appeal.

The name comes from the key visual element – the “splat” – which is the vertical piece that fills the space between the chair’s back supports. The design not only looks elegant but also provides comfortable back support for the sitter.
