Crafting Stunning Pieces In Our Great Home Grown Timbers

With over thirty years experience Steve is very passionate about his work. He loves timber in all its forms – from standing tree to finished table.
Whether it’s the stature of a forest in all its glory; the smell of sawdust as he planes a piece of timber; or saving off-cuts by the stove in his workroom that he can’t bear to burn because they feel too special and look so unique. He feels genuinely blessed with the good fortune of being able to spend his days crafting wonderful things in all of our great home grown timbers.
“It all started with the old man. He taught me to appreciate the countryside and everything in it including the trees that provide me with the raw material to make beautiful things. He’s still going strong and still making the odd piece too.”
Steve is always eager to share his enthusiasm for wood with others and to help keep the process nice and simple. That’s why when you come to him for a handmade table or chair it’s so important to him that the focus is on what you want. As part of your conversations, for a table for example, he will help you to consider timber type and finish, how much seating room is required for each person, table width, base considerations and top thickness.
“Our table is absolutely gorgeous, perfect!! You have done everything we asked for and more. I don’t think I have ever had anything so beautifully crafted, it is worth every penny. Also, thank you to the delivery guys for being so careful. Great service, fabulous product. Thank you so much, we are chuffed to bits :-)” Tracey Rickard, Weymouth, Dorset
Just one example that you’ll see in the showroom is this beautiful handmade refectory table with gun barrel turned legs. It’s a stunning piece of furniture and for Steve has to be one of the most charming tables he’s crafted. It is made from a combination of reclaimed and kiln dried English oak. The table is 2 inches thick and is distressed with a wonderful patina. It is a permanent feature at Folly Farm and although he has had several offers to purchase it, he’s always resisted the temptation. Of course he can always make one specially for you crafted in one of our great home grown timbers.
Steve picks all timber by hand, as each piece of timber is different. If you would like, this is the chance for you to come along and visit the sawmill to choose your own timber. You can even discover the origin of the tree it came from, as Steve only uses ethically sourced timber from sustainable forests. Every log he uses has a serial number and can be traced back to where it was felled. It’s this care, appreciation of the timber, and attention to detail that all goes towards making your piece of furniture unique and exclusive to your family for generations to come. Steve wants you to be as passionate about your finished piece of furniture as he is.
