This traditional styled lath back chair is made in English oak for Steve to his exact requirements. It’s a side chair version of a farmhouse carver and references the Windsor style. The Windsor chair tradition arose from a growing need in the eighteenth century for everyday chairs, with large quantities made in Victoria times.

A Lath Back Side chair is a traditional chair design characterized by its distinctive back made of thin, flat wooden strips called laths. The chair features multiple horizontal laths running between the back posts, creating a simple yet elegant appearance. Unlike ladder back chairs which typically have wider slats, lath back chairs use thinner, more delicate strips of wood for the back support.

The design originated from practical furniture-making traditions where craftsmen would split or saw thin pieces of wood (laths) to create the back support. They represent a practical approach to furniture making that balanced comfort, durability.
