This particular traditional style desk was created for a new home office. It was handmade by Steve in solid English oak. The desk features a combination of four drawers and a small cupboard with a chamfered door. Steve also made a pair of matching bookcases to go with it.

• What Makes A Desk

The word “desk” originates from the Latin word “desca” which means “table to write on”. This is because in the past desks were found primarily in monasteries or universities. It was in these great institutions that books were written and read. Desks were designed with sloping tops to support the large parchment volumes that took up their whole surface.

These days desks come in all shapes and sizes. Their many styles reflect our varied modern office and home working requirements. Some are simple writing surfaces with perhaps one or two drawers for filing and storage. While others contain a number of drawers and platforms, designed to work with laptops and computer keyboards.
